The results showed a significant effect of the second standard's duration. It would seem that after encoding the second standard the participant’s memory of the first standard becomes so degraded that they use their memory of the second standard to complete the task. Therefore the participants use the rule “I remember that the first standard was a lot longer than the second standard so I’ll respond at durations much longer than the second standard”. This rule would account for the distortion to the temporal generalisation gradients shown below (figure 1 and 2).
